You must see this...
It is a clip of a documentary that William Knight is making of a group of Cuban Bartenders called the Last of the Cantineros. This video is of Senior Fabio Delgado Fuentes who was known as Papa, Father of all cocktail makers. He worked at Sloppy Joes and is said to have invented 33 cocktails, one of which called The Martini Special for Errol Flynn.
William is the producer of what is now a 30 minute piece about the members of the Cantineros Club. The Cantineros Club is an organization of eliet barmen in Cuba. The club is invite only and one has to be considered a Master Barman before an invite is even considered. William plans on doing similar pieces on the other Cantineros to round out his documentary.
Fabio Delgado died 6 months after this film was made and this leads us to William's plight. William produced this with his own money and is now looking for capital to complete his project, but the Cantineros are not getting younger. If you or someone you know is interested in helping fund this project let me know and I'll get you in touch with William.
The drink made in this video is exquisite too:
1.5 oz Anejo Havana Club Rum
0.5 oz Red (Sweet) Vermouth
3 drops Angostura Bitters
Mix Rum, Vermouth and Bitters in a mixing glass. Add ice and stir for one chorus of a Cuban band playing in the background. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and add a cherry.
I'm hoping that William's film is in good shape by next July so we can have a showing at the 2007 Tales of the Cocktail, but we'll see.
Although not up yet William is also putting together a website about this group of Cuban barmen at http://Lastofthecantineros.com.
