What are you drinking tonight? (March 4, 2007)

Tonight I'm having a Gin Martini and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I make mine...

2.5 oz of Gin
1 oz Dry Vermouth
one lemon twist

Stir gin and vermouth for 20 seconds and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add lemon twist.

After I finish this I plan to experiment with tequila and pomegranate juice. The flavor of pomegranate juice is sweet with an interesting berry flavor. I think the flavor of the pomegranate still needs some sweetening so I'll be adding some simple syrup to the mix...

...after finishing off my Martini and looking at my possibilities I came to the following concoction for tequila and pomegranate juice.

2.5 oz Tequila
0.75 oz Pomegranate Juice
0.5 oz Simple Syrup
1/4 of a lemon thinly sliced
2 dashes Aromatic Bitters

Lop off the two ends of the lemon then cut it in half from top to bottom then lay one of the halves flat on the cutting board and cut half of the half into slice knife width slices. Put slices in the glass, add simple syrup and bitters. Muddle this mixture gingerly. Add pomegranate juice and tequila then shake the mixture with ice for 10 seconds. Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with one last thin slice of lemon.

I've only made the drink 3 times at this point so, try with caution. But, I think it works pretty well. I'm slicing the lemon thin so that we really get the juicing flowing. While making this drink the wonderful lemon smell penetrates your nose. I garnish with the same thinly slice of lemon to remind the indulger of that same smell. If the drink seems a little sour for you I would recommend skipping the muddling part. Simply shaking the cocktail will extract a good amount of lemon juice.

No real name for this cocktail yet, but I'm leaning towards "Oak Alley" as it is the inspiration for this drink as my wife and I recently went there to rekindle the flames.

Ahh, a lovely gin martini. I can certainly appreciate that choice.

I am taking it a little easy tonight, so I am having one of my own fizz creations. Here is the recipe:

2 oz raspberry rum
1 oz pomegranate juice
Juice of ½ orange
Lemon-lime soda

Combine run and juices in a highball glass with ice and stir. Top with soda.

Tonight is my first visit to your site, and I'm really enjoying it. For example, I can fully relate to your drink of choice -- a Maker's Manhattan -- not surprising from a guy who grew up in Kentucky.

I hope you'll check out my blog as well:

I tried a few of your Oak Alley's at the weekend, and I was quite impressed. I actually used a little less sugar syrup, I suppose the amount needed varies depending on what pomegranate juice you're using. Thanks for the recipe!
